How to book TCF Canada: registration and test dates

TCF Canada exam booking is done with an approved test centre, which sets its own test dates and fee: a practice site like ours cannot register you. TCF is short for Test de connaissance du français, a French test whose results IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) converts to NCLC, the French name for CLB levels. Book once your practice results come close to your target, because sitting the test too early means paying twice.

THE SHORT ANSWER

5 steps: pick a centre approved for TCF Canada, check its test dates and fee, register and pay there, gather the documents it requires, then prepare for test day. If seats are scarce nearby, contact several centres and book as soon as practice shows you are ready.

Before you book: are you ready?

Book when every practice result meets your target, or when one is a single level short with a few weeks to go. Three quick questions below (target level, latest practice level in your weakest skill, weeks left) suggest whether to book now or practise first.

1. What NCLC level do you need in each skill?
2. Your latest practice level in your weakest skill
3. How many weeks until you could take the test?

Book, then practise hard

One level to go with 4 weeks left: book a date, then put most of your practice into your weakest skill.

See what NCLC 7 needs

A rough guide from your own practice results. Practice estimates are not official scores.

No practice level yet? Take the free series in listening (Compréhension orale: 39 questions, 35 min) or reading (Compréhension écrite), then turn your score into an NCLC level with our TCF Canada score chart. Read each result by the lower end of its range: it is a practice estimate, not an official score. One good result proves little, so wait for two in a row at your target before paying.

If your plan goes through Express Entry, NCLC 7 in all four skills is a useful target: French-language draws ask for it, and French bonus points start there. See what NCLC 7 (CLB 7) needs in each section.

TCF Canada exam booking in 5 steps

  1. 1

    Choose a centre approved for TCF Canada

    Look for centres running TCF Canada in your city or country, or in a nearby city if nothing suits. Make sure the session is a TCF Canada session, the version whose results IRCC uses for permanent residence and citizenship applications.

  2. 2

    Check its test dates and fee on its website

    Look at its website or contact it: note upcoming sessions, what they cost and any registration deadline, then compare at least two centres. Our guide to TCF Canada exam fees explains how fees are set.

  3. 3

    Register and pay with that centre

    Follow its registration steps. Before confirming, check your name and other personal details, since every document that follows will carry them, then keep a copy of any confirmation it sends.

  4. 4

    Gather any documents it requires

    Each centre says what to send at registration, plus what to bring on test day. Gather everything as soon as you book, not at the last minute. If anything is unclear, ask in writing and keep its reply.

  5. 5

    Get ready for test day

    A full sitting takes about 2 h 47, including 12 min of speaking with an examiner, and each listening recording plays once. Sit at least one full timed series beforehand and ask when to arrive. The evening before, review lightly rather than sitting another series. Our plan to prepare for TCF Canada covers preparation step by step.

Once you have booked:

  • add the date, start time and centre address to a calendar, with a reminder a week before;
  • plan the route, travel time and a margin for delays;
  • reread any confirmation for steps a centre asks you to complete before test day;
  • a week before, check that every document is ready and matches what you gave at registration;
  • share out remaining weeks: weakest skill first, then a full timed series at regular intervals.

Booking rules at a glance

Before paying, ask three questions: what a session costs, what to bring on test day and what happens if you need another date.

Check with your test centre: registration rules

Each approved centre sets its own dates, fees and rules, and they can change. Confirm them with your centre, and read the official TCF Canada information on the France Éducation international website.

Finding TCF Canada test dates when seats are scarce

If sessions fill quickly where you live, search further afield and book early.

  • Ask several centres

    A centre in a nearby city may run an earlier session. Ask each one about upcoming dates and whether it keeps a waiting list.

  • Book once you are close

    Only one level short? Book now, then spend remaining weeks on your weakest skill.

  • Check calendars weekly

    New sessions can open and seats can free up, so look at centres’ websites every week.

  • Do not pay too early

    A slightly later date costs less than a second attempt.

Have documents and a payment method ready, so you can take a seat that frees up before someone else does.

Then plan backwards from your deadline:

  1. Write down your deadline, such as when you plan to create an Express Entry profile.
  2. Subtract however long the centre says results take, plus a few spare weeks in case one skill stays below target.
  3. That gives the latest sensible test date: look for a session before it.
  4. Check the far end too: results are valid for 2 years, while an invitation can take months to arrive. Our guide to TCF Canada results explains what that validity means for a profile.

TCF Trainer is not a test centre

We are an independent practice service, not affiliated with France Éducation international. We do not sell this test or take bookings: registration and payment happen only at an approved centre. Official TCF Canada information is on France Éducation international’s website, france-education-international.fr.
